Northside expands cardiac PET/CT scanning services

The Cardiovascular Diagnostic Imaging Center at Northside Hospital Forsyth now offers cardiac PET/CT scanning.

A cardiac positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) exam is a type of medical imaging that shows biological functions and detailed anatomical structures together. It’s like an X-ray, except it only shows the structures in your body.

A cardiac PET/CT scan tells us about the nature of heart disease and how the heart functions.

Unlike traditional X-rays, which primarily depict the structural aspects of the body, cardiac PET/CT provides insights into both the functional and structural condition of the heart. This dual capability makes it a valuable tool in diagnosing and understanding heart disease. Myocardial perfusion imaging is a type of pharmacologic stress test that evaluates the blood flow to the heart muscle, assessing perfusion at rest and during stress. It helps identify areas of the heart that may be receiving insufficient blood flow, which is crucial for diagnosing coronary artery disease.

Cardiac PET/CT scans offer several notable advantages:

  • Superior image quality: These scans provide high-resolution images, ensuring high accuracy in detecting conditions such as coronary artery disease.
  • Low radiation exposure: The amount of radiation involved in a cardiac PET/CT scan is extremely low, making it a safe option for patients.
  • Efficient exam process: The procedure is typically completed within approximately 30 minutes, allowing for a quick and efficient diagnostic experience.
  • Functional assessment: The viability scan is particularly beneficial as it can clearly distinguish between damaged and viable heart muscle tissue, aiding in evaluating post-heart attack conditions.

Cardiac PET/CT scans represent a cutting-edge advancement in cardiac imaging. They provide essential information that helps medical professionals diagnose and manage heart diseases effectively. Their combination of detailed anatomical representation and functional assessment makes them a critical resource in contemporary cardiovascular care.

In addition to Northside Forsyth, cardiac PET/CT is currently available at the Cardiovascular Diagnostic Clinic at Northside Gwinnett, and it will be available this summer at Northside facilities in Holly Springs and Sandy Springs.
