In September 2019, Rolanda Jones received news that would change her life forever — a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer, a discovery made during a routine colonoscopy.
“I was in disbelief … I didn’t have any symptoms,” Rolanda said. “I prayed for healing and had faith.”
Rolanda was referred to Dr. Ayman Al-Hakim, an oncologist with Georgia Cancer Specialists. “My first appointment with Dr. Hakim was in September 2019, after my colonoscopy. I was greeted with professionalism, positivity and humanity,” she said.
She attended the appointment alone, but Dr. Hakim ensured she never felt isolated. “He offered to contact my family members to share all of the information he shared with me.
“He explained details about my diagnosis, checking for understanding along the way. I trust Dr. Hakim because I know he’s going to provide the best possible care to keep me healthy.”
In October 2019, Rolanda underwent surgery to remove the tumor from her colon. However, in June 2020, rising levels indicated the need for chemotherapy.
Her treatment plan included chemotherapy sessions every other Wednesday at Georgia Cancer Specialists near her home in Griffin, Georgia, each lasting three hours. She continued treatment at home with a chemotherapy pump.
“Having the pump was uncomfortable; at times, I had to sleep sitting up, and ensuring the pump and my port area didn’t get wet during showers was tricky,” she explained.
But Rolanda adapted. “After several rounds of chemo, I was able to sleep comfortably and even return to work with my pump.”
Then, in June 2022, a PET scan confirmed that the cancer had spread to her liver. Rolanda received Y90 radioembolization, a treatment that targets liver tumors with a high dose of radiation. Northside Atlanta interventional radiologist Dr. Jason Levy performed the procedure.
“I knew this was not a curative treatment, but hopefully would lead to another treatment option that would be effective in treating or eliminating my liver tumors,” Rolanda said.
When her liver tumors began to grow again, that was when she saw Atlanta Liver & Pancreas Surgical Specialists’ Dr. Eddie Abdalla, who recommended liver resection surgery. In November 2022, Dr. Abdalla successfully removed all of Rolanda’s liver tumors, and today, she remains cancer-free.
By giving Rolanda a surgical option to cure her colon cancer with liver metastasis, Rolanda credits Dr. Abdalla with restoring her hope.
“I was nervous about what would happen next, but Dr. Abdalla’s passion and compassion allowed me to regain my confidence and faith.
“Dr. Abdalla and his staff made an effort to get to know me personally. … They wanted to know how I was doing medically and personally. They always had encouraging words.”
A strong support system
Though Rolanda’s family lived out of state, they rallied around her. “I have the best family ever!” she said. They organized a schedule to ensure someone was always available to stay with her. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, they found ways to support her from afar.
“They sent flowers, cards, groceries, clothing and Uber Eats. When it was safe to visit, they came in rotation.”
Her friends and neighbors also stepped in, helping with appointments and household chores.
“Throughout my cancer journey, the support from my family and friends was a lifeline,” Rolanda said. “Their love, encouragement and presence reminded me I was never alone, even in my most challenging moments.
“It meant more than words can express — they gave me strength when I had none and hope when it felt impossible to find.”
Embracing life after cancer
Rolanda said her recovery has been an answered prayer — and emotional.
“I fought so hard to get here, staying hopeful and committed to my health has been challenging,” she said. “But I’m thankful for my journey and grateful for my recovery.”
Throughout her treatment, Rolanda felt supported by the staff at Northside Hospital. “My experience at Northside was outstanding! From the beginning to now, everyone has been positive, professional and kind.”
Rolanda said she received valuable resources beyond medical care. “Northside offered so many resources and support. I received counseling and assistance with my bill and transportation. Northside made sure I was taken care of in every way.”
Today, Rolanda is focused on enjoying life with her family. “I spend time with my sons and grandchildren. We go to museums, movies, bowling, roller skating and the park.”
After enduring so much, she cherishes every moment.
To others diagnosed with cancer, Rolanda advises taking it one step at a time.
“Lean on your support system — family, friends and health care professionals. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help when you need it, whether for emotional support, physical care or practical needs.
“Stay connected to the things that bring you peace and joy, and remember that you’re not alone in this journey. Stay hopeful, but also be gentle with yourself, allowing space for both strength and vulnerability.”
