After undergoing bariatric surgery, Richard Balfour shares an incredible transformation journey from severe obesity and major health risks to completing endurance events like the Northside Hospital Peachtree Road Race.
Once weighing over 340 pounds and facing high blood pressure and high cholesterol, Richard was told he was at serious risk for a heart attack or stroke. Through bariatric surgery, medical guidance from Bariatric Innovations' Dr. Srinivasa Gorjala and ongoing support from bariatric coordinator Ginger Rock and nutritionist Ricia Taylor, he rebuilt his health, lifestyle and confidence.

Today, Richard weighs 190 pounds and trains regularly through running, cycling and structured nutrition planning. More than the physical transformation, he describes a deeper shift: a sense of belonging, identity and proving to himself that he can do hard things.
This is a story about reclaiming life, building discipline and finding community through movement and resilience.
